2019 Conference back to top

Annual conference on reconstruction of European historical dances of 13th −20th centuries will convene for its 12th year at Vaganova Ballet Academy, Saint-Petersburg February 22–24, 2019.

The special theme for the conference this year is “Choreographic expression and paradigms of dance perception in the historical perspective.” We encourage participants to study and analyze those theatrical and social dance performance characteristics that determined the audience expectations as well as the direction of creative thoughts of choreographers, dance masters and dancers themselves.

The timeframe is 13th-20th centuries; the geographical scope is Europe, Russia and countries with a choreographic tradition that had been severely impacted by the European one.

Topics may include but are not limited to:

  • Why certain dance was considered beautiful or professional at a given time?
  • How the usage of certain choreography features did ensure the emotional reaction of the spectators that was envisaged by the choreographer, and the overall aesthetic effect?
  • Why the certain era did prefer the certain style or character of dance presentation?
  • What social and cultural context did determine such a preferences?
  • Can we trace any “genetical” interconnections between different perception paradigms, and how?
  • Why the certain periods or regions did become the “nerve centers” of new dance aesthetic development?

We invite the submission of oral, poster and dance presentations addressing such questions and others related to the conference theme and the topics presented above.
